If the bed is worth moving, a trailer may be the only solution. My cabie racjs wiykd carry most any mattress anywhere but please figure in the risk of getting rained on, bugs on the front edge, and how you will secure it. Unl,ess the bed has sentimental value, or is too close to brand new, I would sell it for whatever and buy a new one at the new location. Other techniques would include 1. Drag it behind the vehicle and get dirty looks from the SPCMBS( society for the prevention of cruelty to mattresses and box springs). 2.Strap it on the front bumper and use a periscope to drive with. Imagine the lack of rock chips on that trip. MPG may actually increase. 3. mount it under the Vanagon(maybe syncro owners only) 4. Tie it to your Paulchen bike rack. People will think it's a 911 whale tail on steroids.
