How about a ceramic heater for <$50?? We just started using one in our 12-foot pop-up trailer after talking with others who swear by them. "Low" setting won't trip the braker and should nicely warm a westy interior. Check out the RV newsgroups. There was much dicussion there on the subject.

Now for something dfferent. I recently subscibed to this mail list after having my love of Westys re-kindled by brother-in-law's acquisition of an '84, and am researching pros/cons between getting a 78/79 bus, 80-82 vanagon (both air-cooled type IV), or Vanagon Wasserboxer. The Vanagons have a lot more room, better handling, and more heat (I live in the midwest where winters are cold) than their bus predecessors, but have concerns about cost of Vanagon maintenance, especially with the cooling systems. B-I-L's has over 120K and doesn't leak, but he did have exhaust system problems and learned that parts for a complete replacement of the exhaust system is over $1,000.

Like I said, the Westy has always appealed to me, now more than ever now that it's just me and the mrs. (w/dogs) traveling. The kids are grown and towing a trailer is a pain. Don't want the expense and hassle of driving 5 tons of RV around either.

Comments and experiences are welcome. TIA

Allen Jordan
