Bob, The best place I found for my CB radio (small Uniden model) was on the plastic heater duct immediately forward of the base of the shifter lever. I put it on the driver's side of the duct, near the floor. The display of the unit faces the ceiling and the mic clips to the left side. It's not too hard to reach while driving, though I would like a longer microphone cord. The only potential problem I see with this installation is that when the heat is on, the unit is bathed in hot air from the vent right above it. I haven't had any problems because of this, though, so I'm going to assume it's OK.

As for the antenna, I plan to do like Ron Lussier did and get one of those nice big ol' Firestik antennas permanently mounted to the van. It's on my rather long list of things to do :-(

Currently I have an el-crappo glass mount antenna (like a cellular phone antenna, but larger). Doesn't work that well.

Good luck, Sean Bartnik Johnson City, Tennessee '81 Vanagon L Westfalia
