Here's another alternative:  Use a 83 Vanagon Diesel Accelerator Cable
which is 156 3/4 inches long as opposed to the 80-83 Air Cooled (140 1/3
inches long) or 83-91 Wasser (142 1/8 inches long).

The end that connects to the Diesel Fuel Pump just needs to be snipped off
and you can still have plenty of cable left over to trim as necessary.

Unfortunately, I've only been able to find them at VW Dealers and they
ain't cheap either!  PN 251-721-555S - $53.40!!
