Dear Listees,

I just had my van converted to R134 air conditioning. And I must say it was pretty easy. I found someone who has been doing it for more than four years. He said that 90% of the time nothing more than evacuating the system, pressure testing, and filling with new oil & refrigerant was all that was necessary.

He claimed that changing the compressor/drier/seals was unnessary in most cars he has done in the last four years. The only problem occurs when the system won't hold pressure, which he said is actually quite rare.

He WAS impressed at how much R134 the Vanagon took, however. It also took the system about an hour to "stabilize" so that everything was working properly. "A very large AC system" said he. But sure enough, a drive around the block and I had 50 degree F temperature coming out of the vents.

Total cost: $160.00 and about three hours of waiting. I gave him a $20 tip.

Just my experience, your mileage may vary.

Cheers,
