Karl, starter fits on top side of transmission. Exhaust manifold is end exit type. Chances of a tank from a crashed van are slight here as the Syncro is rare in the UK. Probably a better chance in Germany! I can get a look at a VW parts microfiche at my local dealers - next time I am there I will look up the part number and cost of the tank and let you know.
