Don't feel bad Mark, your way of doing the brakes has merit. If the hub flange interferes with the brake hardware, taking the hub off would make the job easier. Not to say I advocate removing hubs, but that may be why Bentley recommended it. A note to newbies on Bentley manual: don't believe everything you read about required special tools. Most of it is BS. I have successfully performed many repairs without half of the "required" tools. My friend was actually more intimidated of his Jetta after reading his Bentley. We rebuilt his CV joints with hardly any of the tools Bentley recommends.
