    The temperature guage NEVER rises more than 1/8" above the white cold zone
 on the left.  From other posts i've seen, this sounds abnormally low? Even
when
 the rad fan resistor pack was bad and the emergency cooling fan kicked in,
the
 temp guage showed cold.  It usually sits right at the top of the cold zone.
    Could both of these be due to a problem with the thermostat?

Hi Vernon, looks like you are going to need a new temp gauge. Most vanagons
