There is a great alternative for the cable!  I need a custom cable for my
1.6L install and the whole thing cost me less than $10.  I used a brake
cable for a tandem bike for the sheath ($5) and 18' of cable bought from
the local harware store for about $4.  They come in 200' rolls.
