What a weird but somehow predictable thread to find- a Friday thing no
doubt. Since I'm still out of it, I guess it's still Friday as far as
I'm concerned. :)

For me, as someone born in '74, my main selections are stuff that was
played in '77 or later. Mostly punk, harcore, new-wave, no-wave,
post-punk, etc. (Don't worry, I'm not sxe but am not mad at anyone who
is.) As for hardcore, it's mostly "old school" because the newer stuff
is a little too metal for me. Growin' old... My Operation Ivy CD and
tapes are worn out from so much play. No Control/Suffer- era Bad
Religion is good too, as is Pennywise (even though they ripped BR's
harmonies off.) Hüsker Dü's The Living End live CD kicks ass. Mostly
though, along with stuff like The Ramones and The Clash, I listen to
Black Flag, (old) DRI, Circle Jerks, Agnostic Front, Inbred, Minor
Threat, DOA, (old) COC, etc. etc.

As for New-Wave/post-punk, it's mostly Talking Heads, Joy Division,
New Order, Psychedelic Furs, U2, PiL, Wire, Gang of Four, The Slits,
(old) Pretenders (I don't care what you think about that), The Jam,
Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and other stuff.

For new rock, I like Superchunk, The Interpreters, Catherine Wheel,
and a few more. I have also recently gotten into shoegazer music like
The Cranes, My Bloody Valentine, Chapterhouse, Cocteau Twins... but
there's a band that resides somewhere between shoegazer and post-punk
called Idaho that you MUST check out.

Non-rock stuff: eight semesters of music theory have turned me on to
classical music- I'm mostly into Bach, Berlioz, Villa-Lobos, Debussy,
Bartók, Stravinsky, Copland, Glass, Crumb, Adams, etc. I LOVE jazz,
mostly hard bop stuff- if you follow Miles' career, you'll never
listen to any real crap. Wayne Shorter thru Ornette Coleman is great.
Folk music from various cultures is great too; I like English, Scots,
Irish, West-African, and American [blues] folk music forms. Klezmer
music has also endeared itself to me greatly.

And of course, Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan when I'm in that mood.

Guess I failed that one. I'm not a Phishead either, but tons of
Phisheads tell me about Phish like I've never heard of them. I do
think the drum circle is cool, though.
