Scott: I'm the original owner of my '81, and I've replaced the pump once, in 1993. It whined for a long time before I replaced it. The "new" one is whining now (and has been for some time) but I'm hoping to go to 2005 before it gets replaced. I have a theory that the whine is related to restriction ("crud" in technical terms) in the fuel tank. A year or so ago I snaked a wire up into the fuel tank from the pump outlet, and had blessed peace and quiet for 2 or 3 days!
