Do VW tanks have a little metal filter "sock" inside the tank, on the pick-up tube? I can't recall what vehicle I have worked on that had this little permanent sock, but the idea was to catch major chunks of crud prior to their arrival at the filter. Unfortunately, they become clogged, collapse, and restrict fuel flow. Just an idea.
