Subject: 87Syncro Overhead Fan/AC Fuses Melted

Dear listees,

My overhead fan stopped working a couple of months back (I have never bothered fixing the AC, the fan worked just fine). I had it cranked up to 4 one day on a road trip and it just stopped all together so I wrote a letter the list (a few months back). A couple of people told me that it might be the "big" fuse in the rear side compartment and to check that out or its the fan.....i.e. major pain in the neck. So I just got around to it today and found 20amp double fuse (to control each AC evaporator fan) in the rear side compartment. Both housings were partly melted enough so I can't remove the yellow fuses. When tried to take them out they just fell apart leaving the fuses still in there. So I took a pair of small needle nose pliers and tried to get them out....nothing, they are melted and shot and just break apart when i try and pry them out. My questions to any and all: 1:Why did they partially melt the housings -rather- why are the housings partially melted? 2: should I be worried as to why they were both partially melted (because I have seen switches do this before due to a bad connector and I just replaced them no problem), and if so then what?? - -or--- 3: Can I just remove the old fuse housings from their wires and get a couple of make shift 20amp fuses and housings from NAPA (only parts store where I am), or do I really need VW parts for this. Any advice as always would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks PS: If you have a Bentley manual the fuse I am refering to is on page 87.4, Fuses S 51 Chris W. 87 Syncro GL
