Check your compression, had the same problem after rebuilding, turned out that my rings weren't staggered properly and had a similar problem. I am just finishing putting it all back together now. Actually I live in Harwinton... about .5 air miles from the fairgrounds. I saw a lot of nice vans and buses there. I am starting to have a problem with my 1986 Vanagon. It is gas, automatic with a new motor about 30k ago. I had this trouble once before about a year ago and then it went away.. but I have not driven it much since then. The trouble is that when I try to accelerate it has almost no power. I mean sometimes it will run just above an idle witht the accelerator right on the floor. If it makes it above 3000 rpm it then seems to start running OK. There is no sign of backfiring. How ever when this trouble occurs the motor seems to run rough at idle. I have not way of measuring fuel pressure but I would guess that may be I have a problem with the punp or filter? Any comments? Feels really wierd with the gas pedal to the floor and not going anywhere... Then irt seems to kick in Thanks for any help PaulC
