specifically, maybe. but the underlying force for proliferation and preservation throughout the 19th century was this idea called, "manifest destiny". which simply put means, "god has provided thus far and therefore it is our destiny to conquer and fortify the continent" (we're still not done...). so, in light of this we can more clearly see the civil war as an event of two parties simply duking it out over their idea of the former. god said he'd provide, not necessarily preserve. seems like man failed.
