Front disc brakes provide more of the braking force, their friction surface (which gets VERY hot), is physically closer to the lug nuts than on the rear, and the mass of the discs is often less than that of the drums, less metal to absorb the heat. All of this combined makes the lug nuts on the front hotter than the rear.

If you suspect you have bearing problems, take a little highway trip for 5-10 miles without braking, then COAST to a stop on the side of the road, (a safe distance from traffic, yadda-yadda-yadda). The bearing cap will be hot.
