Subject: Westy Canvas waterproof?
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hi All,

The fabric doesn't need waterproofing!! It seals up when humidity is high, watch how the canvas will tighten/rain-proof as rain approaches, then it loosens up and breathes when passed. Seal up the fabric and you will defeat this mechanism, so you better make sure it works, whatever you use. I don't even wash mine with anything other than garden hose and a clean brush. They only leak when something presses against the insides while raining and they bleed through. Once that happens that area keeps bleeding until it gets to dry out and recover again. About 30 years of Westy ownership and lots of storms have taught me to leave the canvas be.

bye, Tim
