Subject: Erratic runnign Vanagon... fuel pump?

Hello Folks,

Thanks to all the people that answerred my last post on the list. WellI got back to basics and started to check things and I found the followings.

First I found a burned rotor and cap. The center pin on the cap had worn down and was no longer making contact with the rotor. This was not helping matters at all. So I replaced the cap and rotor and checked timing. This ok now. The engine runs better, however it is still running rough and stalling at idle.

I noticed something else. When it runs poorly.. the injectors make a slight tapping noise, when it begins to run better,, the tapping goes away. The worse it idles the louder the taping noise as soon as the noise goes away, the engine runs very smoothly. This operation is erratic. It is almost as if there is a vaccum leak on a carburated engine. I spoke to a local repair shop and they sugested changing th e fuel filter, siting that if there was too little fuel in the injector rail the injector would be empty or close to it and yuo would hear the the seleniod in the injector open and close

Well I replaced it and it did not help. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge so I cannot measure fuel pressure. Althought I think it is the next logical step I would like to hear if any thinks the fuel pump replacement is needed? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Similar problem

Again thanks for all the help.
