I had exacly the same symptoms with my 87 Syncro GL (non Camper). Plus throuw
in the tendency to cut out on right hand turns.  I fiddled with things and the
problem went away.  I did have the digifant brain unit unfastened when the
problem dissappeared.  I drove around with the brain unbolted for a month and
everything worked great.  I re-mounted it and it has continued to work great
for several years now.  Reading your post, I'm guessing that I just got lucky
when re-mounting it in such a way not to cause the problem.
