I've got a few old Road & Track articles:

1980 Vanagon test (aircooled engine): Braking from 60 MPH 164ft. from 80 MPH na

1983.5 Vanagon test (waterboxer): Braking from 60 MPH 178ft. from 80 MPH 297ft.

control in panic stop: EXCELLENT (1980) VERY GOOD (1983.5) overall brake rating: VERY GOOD (1908 & 1983.5)

The above are for the non-Westy Vanagon.
