Hey all, Surprisingly, I passed northern VA's emissions inspection today! Woohoo!!!!

I passed the visual surprisingly and then I passed the sniffer test. For the sniffer test, they back the drive wheels up onto a a dyno and leave the other wheels on the ground (I don't know what they do for Syncros). They stick a probe up the tailpipe and then run the car at 15 mph and 25 mph, with engine rpm not to exceed 3000 rpm. This meant 3rd gear at 25 mph for my '81 air-cooled Vanagon.

Here are the results:

EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEMS INSPECTION: Air Injection System: N/A Exhaust Gas Recirculation System: PASS Positive Crankcase Ventilation System: PASS Catalytic Converter: PASS Fuel Evaporative System: PASS Thermostatic Air Cleaner System: N/A Gas Cap Pressure Test: N/A Evaporative System Pressure Test: N/A Evaporative System Purge Test: N/A OBD Fault Code Inspection: N/A

15 MPH: Limit Reading Result HC ppm 157 138 PASS CO % 2.24 1.42 PASS NO ppm 3002 1492 PASS RPM 2094 VALID Dilution 14.82 VALID

25 MPH:

VISIBLE SMOKE INSPECTION: PASS

Again, WOOHOO! Does anyone know what "dilution" is?

PS, it was a good Bus day too. When my van was done, a NICE '79 Bus pulled in for inspection and I spoke to the owner. Turns out he lives right around the corner from me. Also saw a splittie with roof rack on the way home. Cool.

Thanks, Sean Bartnik Fairfax, Virginia '81 Vanagon L Westfalia
