Doug; I like the way you think, the simplest solutions are often the most eloquent. The only problem I see is filling the freon without introducing air. A closable valve at the inlet and outlet of the hermetic unit might be feasible. You would still need schrader valves to check the pressure and adjust the level. So, fill the hermetic unit, attach to vehicle schrader valves, open valves and try to bleed interconnect lines. The only other problem is possible restriction in flow at schrader valves.
