HAM radio's 2m band is 144 to 148 MHz and the 70cm band is 430 to 450 MHz. From the store my radio (ICOM W2A) only transmits in this frequency range. It can recieve from ~128MHz to 174Mhz and ~400MHz to ~1000Mhz. By "opening up" the radio this enables me to transmit out side of the HAM radio bands. It is necessary to do this in BC bacause most logging roads are radio controlled and you have to call what KM you are at on the road. You call the KM you are at so logging trucks know where you are at as they have the right-of-way. Also, if needed, I can call for help on frequencies out side of the HAM bands.
