At least some Syncros come with two coolant temperature sensors, both in the bottom of the thermostat housing. One is for the ignition system, this one has a two-wire connector and the corresponding socket on the thermostat housing looks to the driver's side. The other sensor is for the temp gauge. It has two single pins looking towards the front of the car, one pin connecting to ground with a short brown wire, the other connecting to the temp gauge via your dangling yellow/red wire. Maybe, the pin is gone (they're not very sturdily built), which would mean you'll need a new temperature sensor :-(
