Subject: A/C compressors
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Both Ron and Kyle are offering new A/C compressors -- I guess some stock of these must've cropped up. Kyle offered his first, and I've been wanting a new compressor for some time -- my lives only by the grace of JBWeld -- so I got one from Kyle.

Last time I ordered a compressor (almost two years ago) I was sent a compressor that is similar to the one in my '86 Vanagon, but the wiring and end fittings were different. I was assured by the supplier that it was the correct part. I ended up resorting to JBWeld.

The compressor Kyle sent is the same. I have no idea about Ron's.

The compressor in my Vanagon has the hose connections both held on by a single allen-head bolt, using a toggle-bar to hold the slip-fittings in place. One hose goes to the center of the unit, one hose fits at the very edge of the compressor. The replacement pump has threaded fittings, both equally off-center. The pump body appears quite similar and looks as if it would fit in place. The eletrical connection is different, but that appears minor.

Kyle has offered to take the pump back, but this does not solve my need for a pump. I rather suspect the Ron is selling the same pump as Kyle (albeit cheaper). Does anybody know if this pump can be made to fit easily? On the surface, it looks like the only way to fit it is to have all new hoses custom-made. I have been unable to remove one of these hoses from the bus in the past (the one from the compressor that runs all the way to the front). and don't relish this.

The Bentley shows a compressor like the one installed on my bus, but says that it is superceded by a Standen 709, which needs some hose retrofit as well. Any advice?

Malcolm
