Subject: loud trans clanging in reverse and first
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

sorry about this, but my syncros clanging/lurching occurs most noticeably when using reverse after a long highway drive, but is also present in first gear when pulling out. If i rev the engine more than normal, i can reduce the lurching/clanging but it doesn't fully go away until the vehicle has cooled overnight.

vanagon syncro 180,000+miles total on vehicle transaxle and clutch replaced about 55,000mi ago redline MTL in transaxle and differential (replaced about 7500mi ago) tires yokohama Y370LT (same tire size front and rear) 47 psi front, 50 psi rear (6000miles old). Problem occurs after extended highway drives in warm temperatures (not present in winter) and has only become evident this late spring/summer of 1998.

thanks, fred
