Fred,
I think the problem lies not in your tranny but somewhere in the engine. For
some reason, the engine is lurching when put under load at low rpm. Most
likely related to the FI system somehow. Just might be the throttle switch.
My theory is that any lurching at the engine will produce the clanging in
the drivetrain. I know this happens on my 87 syncro. When you move the drive
shaft by hand, you can hear the clanging faintly. The harder the lurch, the
louder the clang. This symptom got worse recently when I was having problems
with a misadjusted throttle switch. Now that the switch is working
correctly, there's no more lurching and clanging.
