I doubt the gauge is the problem. Other listees have suggested a couple of other reasons for the erratic blinking red light, however, I have seen (thrice) my coolant level/temp sensor fail, causing this blinking. The sensor cracks between the two contacts (small crack, almost invisible to the naked eye). Coolant then forms a short between the contacts or between the plug and the sensor. Replace your sensor.
