I agree with you completely, but you may not be aware of the newer technologies, and the extremely quiet models available.

Today I looked at a Honda model which produces 1000 watts, yet only emits 60 decibels of sound. (Remember that sound is measured exponentially - 60 is very quiet!) As long as one placed this unit a reasonable distance from any other tents, other campers would be unaware of it, unless they were standing right next to it. Furthermore, I intend to only run it during short periods of daytime, to cool down the fridge. I can't stand big RV's with their TV sets, microwaves, etc requiring big honkin' gennies running all day and night. (If that's 'getting away from it all' - what are they getting away from?)
