Mark, from what I can gather, you have assembled the cv joint incorrectly. The joints can go together two ways, right and wrong. The wrong way allows for no axial motion. Take the thing apart again, rotate the inner part of the cv one click, and reassemble. Check for axial motion of a couple inches when you are done.
