Subject: 86 front squeaks and alternator whines
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

I'm new to the list, with an 86 GL and nearly 200,000 miles (2nd owner). I've owned a number of 70's models, which I was pretty good at fixing problems when they arose, but this one has run so well -- 50,000 miles in less than 2 years -- that I've only been into it for the regular things.

# 1 Question: The front end is noisy/squeaky whenever climbing in or out and going over small bumps. It is more irritating than anything.... It used to be in the passenger side only, now both. I tried spraying lube in there in different places, but never eliminated (or reduced) the noise. The shocks seem to be in good condition.

# 2 Question: We live in South Bend, IN, and recently drove to Albuquerque. Halfway through Nebraska the alternator breathed its last. Fortunately, a Grand Island auto parts store had a rebuilt in stock (WOW!) and I installed it. But the thing whines so much; it has more than doubled the noise coming from the engine compartment. (Can you tell noises irritate me?) Is this to be expected? BTW, I have air conditioning and so I have the heftier alternator. It seems to work fine, though; the air continues to work well.

Suggestions welcome.

Scott

I wish I were half the man I wish I were.
