i've got a '84 Wolfsburg edition 7 passenger van non-GL "weekender" Sunroof
(huge factory sliding sunroof - 3.5 foot square) With a/c....(yep..sunroof and
a/c ...a/c evap. duct stops right before the sunroof)
(top of the line passenger van in '84)
the "Wolfsburg Edition" models were introduced in '84, and they were an
upgraded trim line available on all VW's - (Jetta/rabbit/quantum/scirocco,
etc...)
identified by the little Wolfsburg "medallion" on the front fender.
in '84 there were 2 Wolfsburg Limited Editions (WLE for short) offered on the
vanagons.
-there was the '84 WLE Westfalia poptop Camper, which was always badged as a
GL, and was always 2-tone tan over brown, with tan poptop with skylite, and
with a herringbone tan VELOUR interior. this camper was loaded with the full
camper interior, and always had the center seat tracks in the floor, and came
with either the 2 person middle seat, or the single swivle bucket seat w/
storage box underneath.
it had all the options of an '85, one year early. (ps, updated dash cover,
tach, dig. clock) but a/c, and rear wiper, were optional.
also, the '84 WLE's had the steering wheel horn button padded over. why? hoo
knows... :<) but they did.. :<) (there's actually a vw symbol underneath
there)
the other '84 WLE model was the '7 passenger Vanagon - just badged as
"Vanagon", no "GL"... and was always blue (tho there were two blue paint
colores offered - the Dove blue metallic, and the dark navy non-metallic blue.
these had the silver stripes down the beltline, another thing that was intro'd
one year early on the WLE passenger vans. The interiors were always the blue
SHREDDY CORDUROY. this is the worst-wearing interior that vw has ever put into
a vehicle, IMO...and the front seats are usually always shredded.
they were all "weekenders", the back seat folded into a queen sized bed with
matress over the engine, and the middle seat folded forwards. tho the rear
sofabed was more of a "Camper" style -it was made by Westfalia, and is
constructed of wood, and has side bolsters, just like the westfalia camper
sofabeds. this was only done on this year, and model. in '85 the "weekender"
option was offered as an option on all GL's and had a the later style metal
framed weekender sofabed which was used till '91. there were no passenger van
WLE's offered in '85, or '86.
the '84 passenger van WLE's were also the ONLY vanagon that came STOCK with
the rear hatch "jailbars" - the aluminum decorative bars that were previously
used on split window '67 down microbuses to "protect" the rear glass, moreso
for decoration. the '84 WLE westfalias did not have the rear "jailbars", just
the blue '84 WLE passenger vans. the WLE pass vans also had the padded over
steering wheel horn button, and there was also a full snap on curtain kit,
blue, that included curtains all around.
another thing that the '84 WLE passenger vans had that the '87 up WLE's didnt
have, was camper style sliding side windows, with screens, and the rear hatch
mosquito net was standard on '84 WLE's. as with the '84 WLE camper,
ps/tach/digital clock, etc were intro'd a year early on the '84 WLE pass van
too.
i woundnt say they were rare - but they were definately more expensive, less
made, and quite a interesting number of stock options.
