<< We got a new 87 Westy Gl this weekend, runs good ideals good. When decelerating between 2000 rpm. and 1500 rpms. it bucks wildly. I check the compression 118,128,140,135. Change the plug wires which I had, the local parts store was close for the forth so I couldn't do anything else. Any ideas where to start. thanks Bill >> I'd start with a carefull look at the throttle switches on the throttle body. The throttle switch shouln't have more than .5 ohms of resistance when closed, and infinity ohms when the throttle is just barely opened. Automaticly with a new purchase of this vanagon, perform a major BOSCH tuneup, Bosch W7DTC three prong spark plugs, you already did the plug wires, cap and rotor, air and fuel filter ( filters can be generic), new temp sensor for the fuel injection, check intake system for leaks, change ALL THE FLUIDS, including the hydraulic brakes and cultch slave cylinder fuid flush, new O2 sensor, properly dial in the fuel injection and timing (see a VW vanagon pro on that part at least) and clean the motor when done. An overall inspection of the vehicle also. Good luck. Michael Modl 87 syncro.
