Subject: Help- stranded- cv joint problem
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Well, I was pretty pleased with myself having just removed, cleaned and regreased my cv joints for the first time. Things seemed to be going really well. Got them back together and went to reinstall. Here's the problem. I get a bolt in place on the outer joint, and I can't get the axle to angle up so that I can bolt in the inner side. Axle is perfectly parallel to the ground. There's no mention of doing anything special when reassembling so I've obviously screwed something up. With the joints on the axle I can move the middle ring using my fingers through what I assume to be its full range of motion. I kept track of which joint went on which side, and the proper direction for it to go onto the end of the shaft. As for putting the joint itself back together, it doesn't seem like that could have been done wrong since everything fit together properly. Can anybody tell me what I've screwed up, or what I'm doing wrong? How hard should it be to get the shaft to angle upwards? I've pushed reasonably hard but don't want to break anything. Should I be able to get the shaft to pivot by hand when I've got everything on the bench?

The vanagon is the only vehicle in the family, so we're stuck until I figure this out, or until I give up and take it to a mechanic on Monday. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'll be checking mail first thing in the morning (have to bike to work to check it). I'm on digest so please send p-mail. Thanks again
