Kristin,

No, they really, really do not smell, except for that very brief moment when you open the valve to "flush." They are sealed tight. In fact, the bottom tank, ie holding tank, is designed to be removed and carried sideways like a suitcase to be emptied. You can tilt it any angle, even upside-down and it won't leak. The upper tank, ie fresh water tank, will however leak clean water if you tumble the Potti. Good luck.
