They keep telling me that they did it correctly so air in system can't be. >> HI Kohl, as a precation it is necessary to check the coolant reseviour cap by means of a pressure test. If it's RELEIVING coolant pressure too soon, than it has to be replaced. You never noticed a leak because when the reseviour cap would release excess pressure, the coolant goes through that hose connected to the reseviour cap and then to the bottle behind the license plate. Now yours was probably at the begining stages of being a minor leak and caught before it got worse. Your temp gauge is reading normal. The fan shouldn't come on until the needle in the temp gauge is about two millimeters past the middle. Maybe the sending unit for the temp gauge had some corrossion on the tip making it less sensative wich would cause the temp gauge to read a little less and now that the system has been refurbished, the sending unit is cleaner and more sensative. Don't worry about it as long as your low speed fan comes on just past the middle on your gauge. If it would make you feel better and you want to check for air in the system, then drive just the front end of you van or whole van up a steep driveway, remove the upper grill, barely open the bleeder screw ( top left of the radiator as you are looking at it ), only should see a steady stream of coolant come out. If there is a little air in the system, you will see it come out first, followed by a steady stream of coolant. I hope this helps. Michael Modl 87 syncro.
