Susan :

On the early 091 transmissions, the shift-fork adjustment was critical.
On the later (091-1)models, there was no adjustment at all. I can't
remember what year you had.

A worn gear hub or operating sleve gives this type of slipping out of
gear, but VW sells the hub and sleeve together- you should not have an
old sleeve.

If it is late model, that it almost *has* to be an external adjustment.
