Ask him if he replaced the 3rd/4th clutch hub and operating sleeve assembly. If it is not an external linkage problem then I would suspect that he reused the old assembly. This sounds like the clutch hub is flexing due to cracks and after the inital load is taken off 4th it moves somewhat. When the load is reapplied then the engagement between the slider and the gear teeth are out enough that it 'rolls' off and pops the trans back into neutral. This is one of several reasons why I don't mess around with old hub assy. that look good and replace them during a rebuild as standard procedure.
