hi, everyone,

thanks to all who sent suggestions about the rebuilt transmission jumping out of 4th gear problem. i've passed the first few -- the ones about the worn hub assembly -- onto the mechanic, but he said he used a new one when he did the rebuild. he and his brother, a "master vw mechanic" now working for volvo, thought they'd rectified it after making some adjustments last night (sorry, don't recall what), and he called me to come get it. i drove it home only to discover that the problem is still there. so now he's stumped, and has asked me to drive it a little over the weekend and bring it back monday.

i've noticed it jumping in two situations: one when i'm starting from a stop and going through the gears into fourth. just when i shift into fourth and apply the gas, it'll pop. also, when i've been cruising along the highway in fourth, it has popped. all i've done is engage the clutch and push the gear shift back into fourth, and all's well.

my question, and i do have one, is: do you think it's ok to continue driving? i'd planned to do some errands this afternoon and would be driving about 100 miles roundtrip.

anyway, i've printed out all the emails from you and i'll pass them onto the mechanic, who has warmed to the idea of a cumulative brain trust working on the problem.

thanks again, all
