Subject: Engine alternatives for Vanagons

I'm not (yet) in the mood to do an engine conversion, but I've been speculating on some interesting choices for my 86 Syncro (water cooled).

Due to proximity (parts, service, etc), I'd be tempted to go the Subaru route, but rather than the 4 cylinder, I'd be interested in the 6 (not a common engine, but it was put into the XT6, which was a 4 wheel drive vehicle).

On the other paw, staying German with the beastie has it attractions. Expensive choices too, but Porsche has the boxster engine (3.4 liters) in their Boxster and 996 (the new 911).

Any comments from folks about these possibilities?
