Subject: Alloy wheel torque specification

I have a 1991 Vanagon Westfalia Multivan which I have owned for several years (previously owned a brand new 1980 Westfalia camper and then a used 1986). I am a new subscriber to the Vanagon talk group, so excuse me if the following has been recently discussed. My Vanagon has the factory alloy wheels with the original (presumably steel) lug bolts. What is the recommendation regarding use or nonuse of an anti-seize compound on the lug bolts when reinstalling a wheel? Any suggested brands?

Also, the owner's manual says to torque the wheels to 130 ft lbs, but only shows photographs of steel wheels. I asked the service department of the large VW dealer near me, and they said 130 ft lbs for the factory alloy wheels. This seems way too high to me, and I have been torquing to a lower figure. What is the correct torque specification for the factory alloy wheel with the original factory bolts?

Thanks.

Jim Perrin
