Subject: Leaking head gasket after overheating
Comments: To: Vanagon@VANAGON.COM

Greetings All.

A coolant hose broke on my 85 Vanagon resulting in terrible pinging and a cracked passenger side cylinder head. After replacing it and pressure testing the coolant systems several times I now find I have a slow drip from the head gasket on the drivers side. I am weighing my options at this point and think I have three: leave the head alone and deal with the leak by replacing coolant (the vans got numerous problems and I really don't want to spend much more money on it), take the head off and replace the gasket, or replace the head. I am not sure the second option makes any sense since the head may have warped from overheating. Has anyone ever experienced this. Or does anyone have a feel for how quickly a slow leak becomes unmanageable. Any help greatly appreciated.

James Wagner
