Since I have been shopping for a Westfalia I have been focused largely on the for sale ads here and elsewhere. I have not been keeping statistical data but it looks to me like a disproportionate number of Westfalias for sale are '84s and '85s. This is the same years as the 1.9L waterboxer, right? Is there any reason for this correspondence?

I do not believe it is because the 1.9L engine is that much more expensive to keep up than the 2.1L engine and that people are "unloading" them. It does not seem that the 2.1L was *that* much better. Were the Westphalias just that much more popular those years, skewing the population? One sees plenty of non-Westfalias spread across the span of waterboxer years.

If so it's kind of ironic that the unit that is usually on the bottom of everybody's list of recommended engines is the most common in Westfalias; ones for sale anyway. Could the "collectors" have that much impact? Curious...
