After several months of searching, I have finally found a '88 Vanagon GL that looks good, drives well, and seems mechanically sound. I say seems because the present owner does not know the extent of any previous work done on the vehicle - if the heads were done, steering rack replaced, etc. Present owner has replaced hoses, belts, a/c compressor, and other assorted maintenance. Owner says vehicle is a "California" Vanagon. So, two questions: 1) I assume the difference between a California Vanagon and a 49 state one would be the pollution and emission control stuff. Is there any way to tell one from the other just from looking in the engine compartment? Just want to keep this guy honest. 2) Does anyone know of any Vanagon friendly VW shops in the Rochester, NY area? I want to take my find to one for a once over, just to be sure. All help appreciated.
