Hi folks! I must say that as the owner (as of two weeks) of an ' 86 Vanagon Syncro GL that cars DO indeed have personalities if not "feelings"...I drove a ' 71 bus for 14 years and it had a name within a week of my purchase of it, ditto my ' 69 squareback (and also an oddball ' 85 SAAB 95 I owned briefly). When my husband and I started looking for a Vanagon to replace my beloved ' 71 (hit amidships badly last November) the first few cars we saw didn't "jump up and talk to us" but this ' 86 Syncro did almost from the start. We bought it as was and have been doing some maintenance as the car was sitting for 6 months without so much as a bath. I also believe this one was giving its owner some trouble just to get passed on....we plan to enjoy it although we were a bit shocked at the price of parts compared to the ' 71, maybe we were living in the past.....and yes, my husband is the type that only trusts his own mechanical work.
