Oh, I'm not saying that Porsche prices aren't scary, altho I have twice purchased Porsche engines that ran for less than $2000. I'm pretty much priced out of the new German car market -- I think Japanese cars are much better value for the cars that HAVE TO be running on Monday morning. But I'm not sure any other conversion would have been within my skills and my toolset. I would rather get a Porsche engine and do the conversion myself and call it a hobby, than drop off my Vanagon, some engine that my wrenches don't fit, and $x,000, at some shop where they can have all the fun. Doing it yourself is eccentric; having it done is bizarre. The van is old enough to vote, after all. In the conventional scheme of things, it should have been smelted down into Chevys two-three times by now. B. -- William R.
