Alan,

Good luck with your 88 GL.

There are two reputed shops in the Rochester NY area that specialize in VW. The best one to take your find and ask them to check it out is:

CDI Inc. 7494 Victor-Mendon Road (AKA. Route 251 south of the Victor exit on the NY Throughway) Victor NY 14564 Phone 716-924-3598 Fax 716-924-2493

the other is shop is also a Sunoco gas station:

Sutherland Service Center LTD. 9 Monroe Avenue Pittsford, NY 14534 Phone (716) 381-5619 (800) 724-1195

I have also heard of a VW shop in AVON NY. south of Rochester on Highway 390 but I do not know the name or Phone#

Hope this helps.

I also wanted to provide these two shops to Karl Bloss to add to the VW shop list but I should probably check with the shop owners if they want free advertising and endorsements on our list, first.

After several months of searching, I have finally found a '88 Vanagon GL that looks good, drives well, and seems mechanically sound. I say seems because the present owner does not know the extent of any previous work done on the vehicle - if the heads were done, steering rack replaced, etc. Present owner has replaced hoses, belts, a/c compressor, and other assorted maintenance. Owner says vehicle is a "California" Vanagon.

So, two questions:

1) I assume the difference between a California Vanagon and a 49 state one would be the pollution and emission control stuff. Is there any way to tell one from the other just from looking in the engine compartment? Just want to keep this guy honest.

2) Does anyone know of any Vanagon friendly VW shops in the Rochester, NY area? I want to take my find to one for a once over, just to be sure.

All help appreciated.
