A few years ago, I was looking for a new O2 sensor for my '84. I called around to several dealers who all quoted me the $118 until I called YBH VW and the guy actually 'fessed up and said "it's $118, or you can buy our generic for $39 and cut the wire." hmmm. I wonder why none of the other dealers let me in on this little secret...
