I have heard that they "can" be rebuilt, but the results are questionable, and not as lasting as new. must have beleived it because i have been hauling around a 1985 Scirrocco Compressor (fits my Jetta) with the thought of rebuilding it, but haven't needed to.

A footnote: depending on WHERE it is leaking, it may not be a big deal. The compressors use a variety of "face plates", that is, the thing that the hoses hook up to. In between the face plate and the compressor body, there is a small gasket. I'm going out on a limb (guessing), but I would suppose that replacing that gasket whould be no big deal, as the AC tech often has to change face plates to fit a new compressor to your car... again, just a guess.
