Chris, My 87 Syncro had similar problem back when it was still under warranty. The rpm is not as high as yours but the idle was not stable and if I turned the AC on , the engine will die. The dealer couldn't fix the problem (of course!). Later a VW regional "manager" spent 2 days, replaced every possible components which may effect the idle like idle stabilizer, idle control unit, ECU etc. but in vain. Finally he ordered a whole engine wire harness and the problem fixed. I believe you may have to go through the same procedure, replacing these parts one by one. Also, it could be O2 sensor. I don't think you have a sticky accelerator cable or weak spring since you idle will drop. My 85 GLI has unstable idle too (again not high, just unstable). I've tried a new idle stabilizer and an used ECU but in vain. I'll put a new O2 sensor next since it's due.

Good Luck. Yi-Ruey Wei 87 Vanagon GL Syncro w/leaking cylinder head 85 Jetta GLI w/160,000 miles Dallas, TX

Hi Volks,

This morning towards the end of my commute my van suddenly began revving itself up when I disengaged the clutch or sat in neutral.

It peaks at about 4000 rpm, then settles down again. VROOOM, settle, VROOOM, settle, VROOOM, settle, you get the idea.

I confirmed that my sandal wasn't caught on the accelerator pedal, causing the revving. Pretty wacky, as if Dr. Loveless was in the bushes with a remote control, trying to force me into the intersection. If they're really out to get you, it's not paranoia.

It has had a steady high idle in the winter, that always goes to normal once operating temperature is achieved.

I cruised the archives, but didn't find reference to the symptoms I experienced this morning.

I'd be grateful for any advice. Wish me luck on the drive home.

Cheers, Chris Wyatt '87 Syncro GL Fairbanks, Alaska
